Freelance Website Projects

Over the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to work on several freelance web design projects that each came to me through word of mouth:

Each project was an opportunity to collaborate closely with a business owner, understand their brand, and create a digital presence that supported their goals. The nature of our relationship was largely dependent on how hands-on (or off) they wanted me down the line.

Barry King Tennis Academy

Client: Barry King, former professional tennis player and coach
Platform: Custom HTML/CSS using an HTML5 UP template

Project Overview

Barry King sought a professional online presence to showcase his tennis academy's offerings and philosophy. The goal was to create a site that reflected his extensive experience and attracted aspiring tennis players.

My Role
  • All me!: Barry told me he wanted to be very hands-off. He does not feel tech-savy and wanted the burden off his mind.
  • Design & Development: Customized an HTML5 UP template to align with the academy's branding.
  • Content Strategy: Structured content to highlight Barry's coaching philosophy, services, and testimonials.
  • Responsive Design: Ensured the site was mobile-friendly and accessible across devices.
Outcome

The website effectively communicates the academy's values and services, providing a platform for potential clients to learn about Barry's coaching approach and get in touch.

On Court Adventures

Client: Melissa Tafoya, Certified Pickleball Professional Coach
Platform: Wix
URL: oncourtadventures.com

Project Overview

Melissa needed a dynamic website to manage her pickleball coaching business, including classes, leagues, and tournaments. The site had to be user-friendly and allow for easy updates.

My Role
  • Extremely Collaborative: Melissa is very active in her entrepreneurial pursuits and wanted me to go along the process in a very involved way with her.
  • Making Site Architecture: Organized content to provide clear navigation to classes, events, and booking information.
  • Design Customization: Tailored Wix templates to match the brand's energetic and inclusive vibe.
  • Integration: Linked external booking platforms and social media for seamless user interaction.
Outcome

The website serves as a central hub for Melissa's coaching services, enabling clients to easily find information and register for events, thereby enhancing her business's online presence. We also settled on using Wix so she could be very proactive in her own updates and changes as she needed to be.

Takeaways

These freelance experiences have been invaluable in building both my technical and professional skills. I learned to:

  • Translate a client's vision into a functional and visually cohesive website
  • Adapt my design approach across platforms—from custom-coded sites to flexible, no-code builders
  • Balance aesthetics, usability, and business needs
  • Communicate clearly, consistently, and confidently with clients, done differently according to each person's wants and needs for the process

Most importantly, I learned how to ask the right questions, manage expectations, and keep projects moving forward with a collaborative, client-focused mindset.

These projects sparked my excitement for working closely with real people and helping them bring their ideas to life online.
